Ellie Mae is a beautiful, sassy Appaloosa mare who is solid as a tank! She was born in 2005.
We adopted Ellie Mae along with Winnie in July 2019 from SHARE near Champaign, Illinois. We originally went to meet Winnie. The rescue staff talked with Steve for a bit and then said, “Boy, do we have the horse for you!” We trekked out to a back pasture to meet this big, sassy girl.I don’t know her whole story but from what we’ve gathered, she was raised as a bottle baby. Then she was adopted out via SHARE to a young girl who just fell in love with her. After the girl grew up, she went away to college and Ellie Mae was left with her family. The stepfather was eventually arrested and put in jail for domestic abuse. We have a very strong feeling that he also abused Ellie Mae. She again went to the SHARE facility.
When we first brought her home, she was a handful – biting, kicking, just plain ornery – especially when putting her in and out of a stall. After a few years on the farm, she is a different horse. She’s an absolute baby for Steve and they have the sweetest bond. She nickers for him every time he steps out of the house. When he feeds them each evening, he makes the rounds filling their bowls, but always goes back to Ellie Mae and lets her lean into him while she finishes her dinner.
